dallaire and rwanda

Shake Hands With the Devil.

Having just watched the documentary based on the book, and discussed a bit of the background to the Rwandan Genocide of 1994, what do you think?

Why do you think it happened? What might have prevented it? What could prevent it from happening again somewhere else? What do you think of Dallaire?

Leave a comment with your thoughts.

  1. I think the genocide was poorly managed and it had to be done better. I think the UN should have been more involved than it was. I think it happened because of the growing tension between the hutus and tutsies. No one interviened till it was to late. If the UN had interviened faster and the rules about the identification cards. If the church had been more open they could have prevented it too.

  2. I think Dallaire was right to do what he did, to try and save the Totsis in Rwanda. I think it was horrible what happened ther and that so many died. I hope he forgives himself and can move on and have the rest of his life be happy.

  3. I think it is almost sickening to see that man has the power to drive such hate into himself to be able to commit such atrocities. But at the same time it is a way to show that if such extremes can be commited by man that not only pure evil and hate can be forced that man kind would also be able to show compassion and love. This genocide is a sign and reminder of the darkness that a mans soul can posess, but at the same time it shows the good.

  4. I believe that Romeo is a good man who tried his best with what he had. The UN should have done more and not give up. I think Romeo did a good thing to not leave and continue to try to save the Rwandians even when the rest of the world had given up. It takes a true man to beable to fight for a cause.

  5. Dallaire did what he thought was right; if someone tells you to do something that is against your morals, then why bother doing it? This is exactly what Romeo did correctly. He followed what was right, and even thought thousands still got slaughtered, he did his best to save even more. Life is too short to take crap from people.

  6. Romeo Dallaire had EVERY reason to help the totsis. The UN could have done a lot more. They were quite racist in this situation considering the totsis as not important.

  7. I only saw the second half of the movie, but as a whole I found it really sad. It is crazy to think that things like this happen when we live in such a fortunate part of the world. People can very quickly pretend things aren't happening and ignore serious problems because they are not being directly affected. I hope we live in a society today where more would be done to prevent or stop something like the genocide.

  11. I feel the UN could have done a way better job preventing the genocide. The reason it got out of control was because no one did enough. This Video showed us what really happened it's different from the books or what people tell you because they weren't there they didn't know. I think Romeo Dallaire did the best he could with such little peace keepers sure he made mistakes but who doesn't. People should see Rwanada as a global failure because no one stepped into helped but they expect others to help them at war. Its ridiculous.
